Totalitarianism is created through the use of control and oppression and something that George Orwell examined in both 1984 and Animal Farm. He focused on the tactics of leaders to maintain control and it often leads to a discussion of the effect on the citizens and their well being in a society where their options are so severely limited.
Through Orwell’s life he had many experiences that lent themselves to creating his skeptical outlook on life. For a period of time he worked for the BBC where he realized many of his issues with the manipulation of the medis. He was then sent on a trip and describes his experience as such, "no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but in Spain for the first time I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts" (IHR) This inspired many of the different ministries in 1984 that represented the different ways Orwell saw people being influenced.
